If you see the letters XL or XXL in a piece of clothing, they do not refer to Roman numerals (although XL is the Roman numeral for 40). Instead, they mean Extra Large and Extra Extra Large. The picture shows a lighthouse and many underwater creatures. If you know the markings on the lighthouse are 1m apart, can you work out the distances between some of the different creatures?
The Romans adopted the Etruscan tally-mark system and, over time, changed the symbols into what is known today as the Roman numeral system.
